Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE is considered to be one of the most successful disabled athletes in the UK. Thompson competes in events over a wide range of distances, first competing in the 100m at the Junior National Games for Wales in 1984. Over her career to date, she has won a total of 16 Paralympic medals, including 11 golds, held over 30 world records, and won the London Marathon six times between 1997 and 2002. In 2007, she announced her retirement, with her last scheduled race for Great Britain at the Paralympic World Cup in Manchester in 2007.

She was christened Carys Davina Grey, but her sister referred to her as "tiny" when she first saw her, pronouncing it "tanni", and the name stuck. Tanni graduated from Loughborough University in 1991 with a BA (Hons) in Politics and Social Administration. In 2008, she was appointed as a member of Transport for London, where she chairs the Environment, Corporate and Planning Panel, and is a member of the Surface Transport and Safety, Health and Environment Assurance Panels. In 2010, she was appointed to the House of Lords, where she serves as a non party political crossbench peer, taking the title Baroness Grey-Thompson of Eaglescliffe in the County of Durham. She is a director of UK Athletics and a member of the board of the London Marathon.
